If you haven’t taken apart your OG Xbox yet for maintenance, you should definitely do it. There is infamous clock capacitor which will be leaked. Out of 5 units I worked on 4 had leaked battery and only one had battery still intact. Probably in a couple of years (this post dates 2023) all OG Xboxes will have leaked battery. Another thing to do is change thermal paste for CPU and GPU. The paste has completely solidified and it is particularly hard to take off the GPU heatsink. I’ve seen two types of thermal paste used, one is black/grey which melts quite fine using IPA. Other one is pink and it is sticky and very difficult to remove.
Upgrading IDE to SATA hard drive requires changing IDE cable and SATA to IDE adapter. Cable should be 60cm long, shorter cables will work, but it will be a PITA to fold them correctly. Cheap adapters from AliExpress works, but they are slow to detect hard drive, also when rebooting with controller it fails to load. People say that StarTech.com adapters work fast, will have to verify this.
